What does a EKG Technician do?

EKG technicians support doctors and other health professionals by performing cardiovascular tests, working with patients and monitoring equipment. 

Students who complete the EKG Technician program will be comfortable with medical terminology, disease processes and patient best practices. They will also be prepared for a wide array of tasks, including identifying heart conditions, collecting data, assisting cardiologists and providing professional patient care.

Where does a EKG Technician work?

EKG technicians work in a variety of settings, which may include hospitals, heart centers or private practice offices. Technicians will collaborate with many other healthcare professionals, and there are opportunities to further specialize in other areas such as echocardiography, vascular technology and Holter monitoring.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, cardiovascular technicians have predicted employment growth of anywhere from 10-17%, occurring over the next eight years. Trained technicians will be in high demand, and employers will be seeking qualified candidates to operate equipment, offer technology support and help diagnose patient issues.

Certification Information

Upon completion of the program, students will be prepared to sit for the Certified EKG Technician exam. Before taking this exam, students are required to complete at least 10 EKGs on a live person in order to fulfill their clinical requirement.
